The Director General, National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman, has said the institute has the experience, tools and expertise to support the new members in bill and motion drafting, bill analysis and scrutiny among others.
He made the call during the induction of the first batch of newly elected members of the 10th Assembly on Tuesday in Abuja.
While delivering his opening remarks, he urged the legislators to engage regularly and constructively with the public, civil society, the media, Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and other stakeholders for better legislation.
“As the people’s representatives, the legislature must engage regularly and constructively with the public, civil society, the media, MDAs and other stakeholders.
“Two days have therefore been set aside for interaction with national security and anti-corruption agencies and actors. Members-elect must understand the issues and challenges affecting the quality of governance in Nigeria and how they can work together with these stakeholders to develop legislative measures to address them” he said
He further said the programme was designed based on several capacity needs assessments of Legislators, staff and aides conducted by the Institute and the National Assembly over the years.
