DG NILDS Charges Young Leaders on Governance, Ethics and Knowledge

The Director General of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman, has charged young leaders to pursue knowledge, uphold strong values and prepare themselves for responsible leadership and meaningful participation in democratic governance.

Prof. Sulaiman gave the charge while hosting participants of the “My Voice Matters Young Cast” initiative, facilitated by Ryan and Jasmine Consult and led by Mrs. Mary Makanjuola, during an interactive mentorship session at the Institute’s headquarters in Abuja.

The Director General explained the role of government in maintaining social order, managing competing interests and ensuring the equitable allocation of scarce resources. He also highlighted NILDS’ mandate as a research, training and capacity-building institution supporting the National Assembly and other democratic institutions.

He urged the young participants to build their lives around faith, parental and community guidance, education and continuous acquisition of knowledge, stressing that effective leadership requires both character and competence.

Prof. Sulaiman further encouraged young girls to actively participate in leadership and democratic processes, noting that the future of Nigeria’s democracy requires the meaningful i nclusion of young people, particularly women, in decision-making and public affairs.

As part of the mentorship session, the Director General introduced the young speakers to Mr. Olushile, a former Special Adviser to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who shared perspectives from his experience in public service and provided the participants with an opportunity to learn from an experienced practitioner.

Prof. Sulaiman also shared insights from his personal experiences and leadership journey, emphasising the importance of discipline, purpose, mentorship and preparation for those aspiring to occupy leadership positions in the future.

The engagement ended with the presentation of autographed copies of the Director General’s book to the young speakers, as Prof. Sulaiman encouraged them to remain committed to learning, uphold strong ethical values and prepare themselves to contribute positively to Nigeria’s development.
