NILDS, UNIBEN RENEW MOU, LAUNCH PHD PROGRAMMES IN LAW, POLICY AND GOVERNANCE

The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS, and the University of Benin, UNIBEN, have renewed their Memorandum of Understanding and expanded the partnership to include PhD programmes.

The renewed MoU was signed on Thursday, June 18, 2026 in Abuja. It builds on a collaboration that has lasted over a decade and focuses on postgraduate education, research, capacity building, and policy development.

Speaking at the ceremony, Director General of NILDS, Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman, described the renewal as a milestone in a relationship that has consistently contributed to research, policy development, and higher education in Nigeria.

Prof. Sulaiman stated that the renewed MoU goes beyond another agreement to a reaffirmation of a partnership that has delivered real value for national development. He added that both institutions remain committed to academic excellence, quality postgraduate training, and strengthening democratic governance in Nigeria.

He announced that the expanded partnership now includes a PhD in Law, Policy and Legislation and a PhD in Social Science, Politics and Governance. According to him, the programmes are designed to build research capacity, produce high-level professionals, and develop leadership for public service.

Prof. Sulaiman reiterated NILDS’ sustained commitment to providing conducive environment for research, innovation and policy development. He expressed confidence that both institutions will continue to work together in the spirit of mutual respect, shared responsibility, and a common vison for national progress.

Also speaking, Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN, Prof. Edoba B. Omoregie, pledged the university’s commitment to deepening the collaboration. He noted that the partnership has already produced positive outcomes in training and research.

Prof. Omoregie expressed optimism that this renewed MoU will further strengthen legislative studies, promote high-quality research, and contribute to the consolidation of democratic governance and sustainable development.

The event was attended by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of UNIBEN Governing Council, Prof. Shuaibu Umaru, and senior management from both NILDS and UNIBEN.
