NILDS Advocates for Greater Gender Inclusion in Nigeria’s Legislature

National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS is championing stronger gender inclusion in Nigeria’s legislative process.

Speaking at a validation workshop in Abuja, NILDS Director-General, Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman expressed concern over the slow progress in women’s empowerment despite numerous initiatives. He highlighted the 2023 general elections, where female representation in governance remained below 5%, warning that such low participation could undermine women’s role in policymaking and socio-economic development.

Prof. Sulaiman underscored the urgency of reviewing and updating the 2014 National Assembly Gender Strategy Policy to align with current realities and promote gender-friendly legislation.

He reaffirmed NILDS’ commitment to advancing gender inclusivity through strategic collaborations with partners such as UN Women and FAWE, as well as the establishment of a Gender and Inclusivity Unit within the Institute.

Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory, described the National Assembly Gender Strategy as a crucial framework for increasing women’s political participation and enacting gender-responsive laws. While commending NILDS for equipping lawmakers with essential knowledge, she stressed that the revised strategy must translate into concrete action.

Also speaking at the event, Clerk to the National Assembly Service, Kamoru Ogunlana, reaffirmed the legislature’s dedication to gender equality in policymaking. He lauded stakeholders’ efforts and called for sustained collaboration to implement policies that promote inclusivity and women’s empowerment.

The validation workshop is expected to lay the foundation for legislative reforms aimed at strengthening gender equality in Nigeria’s governance structure.
