DG Nilds Galvanizes Support for Gender Inclusion Laws in Security Sector

The Director General National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies, NILDS, Professor Abubakar Olanrewaju Sulaiman is drumming support for women’s equitable involvement in the security sector.
This according to him is in line with the implementation of the provisions of the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1325 (2000) on women’s Peace and Security ( WPS).

Professor Sulaiman stated this in his special remarks at the breakfast meeting on the presentation of the proposed Gender-Responsive Amendments to Security Sector Institution Laws
organized by NILDS in collaboration with UN Women, Nigeria and support from the government of Germany.

He said NILDS and other Development Partners have been striving towards achieving a gender-responsive security sector in tandem with WPS agenda nationally and globally.

The Director General who noted that the establishment of these Units and Corps do not always translate to greater representation and participation for women in the overall operations of the security agencies added that notable gaps exist in the recruitment and career advancement because of discrimination and dominant masculine workplace culture.

The former Minister of National Planning therefore made a case to give women the opportunity to undergo physical and mental rigors associated with achieving such roles and to provide an enabling environment for them to thrive.

In attendance at the meeting were UN Women Representative Ms. Beatrice Eyong Ambassador Annet Gunther of the German Embassy, the
Chairpersons in the Senate and House Committees on Women Affairs, Senator Ireti Heebah and Hon Kafilat Ogbara as well as, her counterpart on Police Hon Abubakar Makki
Others included representatives of the Chief Defence Staff, Inspector General of Police and the Commandant General, NSCDC.
